COME OUT AND SHINEAT THE MONTRÉAL BIKE FEST!

>> par Vélo Québec

Montreal, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 – Vélo Québec is proud to announce the upcoming edition of the Montréal Bike Fest, which will be held from May 29 to June 5. Presented by the Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec, in collaboration with Jean Coutu Group, the Montréal Bike Fest invites citizens and cyclists from here and elsewhere to come out and shine in Montreal on the occasion of this unique North American bike festival, comprising eight days of cycling events and activities!

“This year more than ever, the Montréal Bike Fest will spotlight Montreal,” says Joëlle Sévigny, Executive Director of Vélo Québec Événements. In addition to promoting the beautiful areas of the city during Tour la Nuit and Tour de l’Île de Montréal, it will be an occasion to announce Montreal’s adherence to the Cycle Chic™ International blog ovement. In addition, the movement’s founder, Mikael Colville-Andersen, will be present during the week of the Montréal Bike Fest to discuss the relevance of a strong urban cycling culture, as well as the emergence of a Montréal cycling culture!”

“I am honoured to be the spokesperson for the Montréal Bike Fest, says actor Sébastien Delorme. I am a Montrealer born and bred, and for me, biking is a real passion. I am delighted to take part in this unique international festival, which features events both day and night, attesting to the vitality of Montréal cyclists. As a regular, I will obviously be involved in all the activities, starting with the Metropolitan Challenge and then Operation Bike-to-Work. Next, my friends and family from all over Quebec will join me in Tour la Nuit and Tour de l'Île de Montréal. It has become an annual tradition for our group of about twenty people… and this year will be particularly special since my 9-year-old son will bike his first Tour de l’Île on his own! So come out and shine with us. Fun guaranteed!”

ONE FULL WEEK OF CYCLING ACTIVITIES

METROPOLITAN CHALLENGE | Sunday, May 29
First major bicycle touring and sporting event of the season, this challenge – the first in a series of three – offers magnificent routes of 75 to 150 km. Departing not far from Lac des Deux Montagnes, the 3,500 participants pedal along a flat, quiet route bordered by orchards. They follow the shoreline from Pointe-Calumet to Saint-Placide, head inland toward Mirabel and then pedal back southward via Saint-Joseph-du-Lac.

OPERATION BIKE-TO-WORK| From May 30 to June 3
An ongoing campaign to encourage biking on a daily basis, Operation Bike-to-Work is in full gear during the week of the Montréal Bike Fest. Workshops, information booths and entertainment at different points in the city help promote this healthy, rapid and economical means of transportation. Montrealers are invited to get on their bikes and put fun before work!

MONTREAL CYCLE CHIC | Wednesday, June 1
The general public is invited to attend a lecture by Mikael Colville-Andersen, founder of Cycle Chic™ and Copenhagenize.com, entitled Four Goals for Promoting Urban Cycling. This lecture follows a series of 25 presentations in 18 different countries. He will address the topic of Bicycle Culture 2.0, using the example of the Copenhagen experience, and will also be present for the launching of the Montréal Cycle Chic blog during the same week.

TOUR LA NUIT | Friday, June 3
Unique urban nocturnal gathering, Un Tour la Nuit brings together 15,000 cyclists, their smiling faces lighting up the falling darkness as they happily pedal the 20-km route. Night life and biking combine to spotlight a city in motion, where all Montrealers shine! Upon arriving at Jeanne-Mance Park, cyclists and spectators continue the celebrations in a musical atmosphere as part of Rendez-vous Loto-Québec.

TOUR DE L’ÎLE DE MONTRÉAL | Sunday, June 5
Popular urban cycling classic, the Tour de l’Île de Montréal gives participants a new perspective on the city as they pedal 52 car-free, carefree kilometres at their own pace. Along the route, the 30,000 cyclists take advantage of rest stations to recharge and then gather at the finish site at Jeanne-Mance Park to celebrate and conclude this week of cycling activities. Welcome to one and all!

FERRIS WHEEL | Icon for the Montreal cyclist!
To mark the occasion of the Montréal Bike Fest in a big way, a 105-foot-high Ferris wheel symbolizing today’s Montreal cyclist will greet participants at the finish site of Tour la Nuit and Tour de l’Île de Montréal!
